Maintaining Oral Health Through Tooth Extractions

Many patients do not realize how important it is to have certain teeth removed. If you have crowded teeth, decaying teeth in the back of the mouth or damaged teeth, we may need to remove the tooth using a simple or surgical technique in order to maintain your health.

We may need to remove a tooth for a number of reasons, including:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Infected tooth or abscess
  • Severe gum disease
  • Fractured tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Preparation for dental implants

socket-preservationYou will learn about the importance of socket preservation when Dr. Morita goes over what to expect with your tooth extraction procedure. We need to make sure the area heals properly where the tooth has been removed. ‘Dry socket’ occurs when a blood clot is dislodged or falls out for some reason. This can happen if you eat from the side of the mouth that was treated while healing or if you drink through a straw.

To preserve the socket, you must follow Dr. Morita’s post-procedure instructions carefully and be especially mindful about the types of foods and drinks you consume. Proper healing will ensure there is enough healthy tissue to accommodate a dental implant and protect the teeth.

We offer sedation dentistry, including IV sedation, to ensure our patients are comfortable during treatment. Whether you are having one tooth extracted or your wisdom teeth removed, we will take extra steps to reduce discomfort and minimize pain. You will be numb the entire time so there is nothing to fear if you need to undergo a tooth extraction.

Don’t delay a tooth extraction or wisdom teeth removal procedure! Damaged teeth can cause an infection and trigger other oral health problems.
